What are bailiffs allowed to charge?


High Court debts.


When the bailiff is instructed, £75.[1][2]

When the bailiff makes the first attendance, £190,[3] + 7.5% of the debt exceeding £1000.[4]

When the bailiff does not make a controlled goods agreement, or the debtor breaches it, £495.[5][6]

When the bailiff starts removing goods for sale or storage, £525 + 7.5%[3] of the debt exceeding £1000.[4]


Actual and reasonable payments made by the bailiff for removing, storing and selling the debtors goods to pay the goods.[8]

VAT is not applicable on bailiff fees, and money taken may be recovered.[9]

Any disputes about the bailiffs fees and charges for the enforcement of a High Court writ may apply for a detailed assessment.[10][11][12]

The fees and charges do not apply when the enforcement power has been stopped by the court.[13][14][15]



Council tax, traffic debts court fines, etc.


When the bailiff is instructed, £75.[16][17]

When the bailiff makes the first attendance, £235,[17] + 7.5% of the debt exceeding £1500.[18][4]

When the bailiff starts removing goods for sale or storage, £110 + 7.5%[17] of the debt exceeding £1500.[19][4]


Actual and reasonable payments made by the bailiff for removing, storing and selling the debtors goods to pay the goods.[8]

Disputes about the bailiffs fees and charges may apply for a detailed assessment.[10][11][12]

The fees and charges do not apply when the enforcement power ceases to be exercisable.[13]

Vulnerable debtors are not liable for bailiffs fees and charges unless the bailiff has given the debtor an adequate opportunity to get assistance and advice in relation to the exercise of the enforcement power.[20]

Bailiff recovering multiple enforcement powers, e.g. multiple traffic debts warrants, may only recover the enforcement stage once, and my multiply the compliance stage by the number of enforcement powers.[21]
