How long before a bailiff debt is written off?


Council tax, six years.

Enforcement stops 12 months from the date on the Notice of Enforcement.[1] The debt is barred after 6 years from the date of the Liability Order,[2] unless the council gives a demand notice[3] which extends the limit a further six years from the date of the notice. After that, the debt is written off.


Traffic Contravention Debts, six years.

Enforcement stops 12 months from the date on the Notice of Enforcement.[1] The debt is barred after six years from the date of the warrant of control,[2][4]


Magistrates Court Fines, never statute-barred.

Enforcement stops 12 months from the date on the Notice of Enforcement.[1] There is no legislation barring unpaid court fines.


High Court Writs, up to a maximum of 7 years.

Enforcement stops 12 months from the date on the Notice of Enforcement.[1] The enforcement power lapses after 6 years since the date of the judgment or order,[5] and a writ of control expires after 12 months from issue,[6] but the creditor may apply to the court, only once to extend that period of up to a further 12 months.[7]
